Elizabeth Addie | Relationship and Family Psychologist

My passion is to help people work through challenging situations to create positive, hopeful, happy lives.

I am a psychologist and relationship counsellor. Before setting up my own private practice I worked for 16 years as a counsellor in S.E. Queensland with schools, TAFE and Relationships Australia. I also provided a loss and grief program for children with Centacare. I then worked as an intern psychologist with Better Futures Psychology Services.

I integrate my counselling skills and my experience in understanding and helping people with psychological knowledge and evidence based treatments to assist you to make the positive changes you would like to create in your life.

I help:

Young people to address mental health challenges and make confident and purposeful transitions to adulthood.

Children to adjust to family changes and the loss of the secure structure that they understood and were familiar with, and to deal with their feelings; knowing that they have their safe and secure place in the world and that they are cared about.

Adults to improve wellbeing and address mental health issues.

Couples helping them to manage the inevitable problems which come from being part of an intimate caring relationship, to focus on their goals of happiness, growth and caring for each other and to learn new skills to meet life's challenges.

I have a commitment to lifelong learning and am constantly studying and undertaking professional development to improve my skills and knowledge. My qualifications are:

Postgraduate Diploma Professional Psychology

Bachelor of Science (Honours Psychology)  First Class Honours

Graduate Diploma Psychological Studies  Dean's Commendation for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Should we see a counsellor?

Evidence Based Psychological Strategies: I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness and Relaxation practices, and in specific therapeutic approaches to assist people who have experienced trauma. In consultation with you I utilise the approach which will work best with your situation and needs.

Relationship Counselling: I am trained in Emotionally Focussed Therapy-Couples, as well as the Gottman Method for Healthy Relationships. These are both evidence based therapies and are complementary approaches.

Family Therapy and Parenting: I am trained in narrative family therapy (Michael White) as well as in integrated parent training (Mark Dadds). Narrative therapy is a dynamic approach which helps people to separate problems from their identities and to build on their own strengths and abilities to resolve problems. Integrated Parent Training helps families manage difficult behaviours in a positive way.

Mental Health for Young People: I have over 10 years extensive training in how best to promote well being for young people in all aspects of their lives. I am an accredited facilitator of the Resilient Adolescent Program (RAP) and an accredited trainer and facilitator of the Seasons Loss and Grief Program.

Cognitive  Assessments I provide comprehensive cognitive assessments and reports for adults and children from the age of six years.

Bariatric Surgery Reports: I provide reports for your specialist for people seeking bariatric surgery. You will need to complete some brief questionnaires before your session, so I can obtain the information required by your surgeon.

Career Pathways Counselling: I help young people and adults to create meaningful career pathways using an integrated approach of vocational assessment, counselling,  and goal setting to create a career pathways plan.
